Creating Folders on the FTP Server
Care should be taken prior to creating folders or placing files into the main college folder. The best practice would be to create a folder for each department within the main college directory. Within each departmental folder, create a folder for each course and within the course folder, place the files that relate to the course.
For example: To share the syllabus for Math 1101, create a folder named Math in the Coas folder. Then, In the Math folder, create a math1101 folder and copy the syllabus file into the math1101 folder.
To create a department folder on the FTP Server:
| Step 1: |
Double-click your college folder in the Remote Site window. |
| Step 2: |
Click MkDir. |
| Step 3: |
Enter your department name (example: Math). |
| Step 4: |
Click OK. |
To create a class folder on the FTP Server:
| Step 1: |
Double-click the Department folder in the Remote Site window. |
| Step 2: |
Click MkDir. |
| Step 3: |
Enter the class name (example: math1101). |
| Step 4: |
Click OK. |
Transferring Files To/From the FTP Server
Before you transfer any files, you need to select the correct mode for transfer. There are three transfer modes in WS_FTP: ASCII, Binary, and Auto. The mode you use depends on the type of information contained in the file. The Binary mode should be used for transferring files that contain word processing documents, spreadsheets, databases, graphic images, photos, bitmap files, sound or audio files, video files, and executable files. The ASCII mode should be used for transferring text or data files – these type files are human readable.
To transfer a file from the Local System to Remote Site:
| Step 1: |
Double-click your college folder. |
| Step 2: |
Double-click the department folder. |
| Step 3: |
Click on the class folder, highlighting it. |
| Step 4: |
In the Local System window, click the file name you want to transfer to the Remote Site, highlighting it. |
| Step 5: |
Click the right-arrow button located between the Local and Remote windows. The file will now be transferred. |
