Wireless VPN Client

The wireless VPN client software is available for faculty and staff check-out at the 2nd floor Circulation Desk in Atkins Library. This handout is designed to be used as a companion to the Cisco VPN Client CD ROM for use with wireless computers. It presents instructions for the initial installation and setup steps for the Windows edition of the VPN client.

The companion CD also contains a complete User Manual in PDF format. After an Autostart of the CD, select Product Documentation, User Guide, Windows to view the complete manual.

*Note: AOL does not support the Cisco VPN Client via broadband or dial-up connection.


VPN Client Installation

Step 1:

Insert the Cisco VPN Client CD. It will autostart if the system is set for autostart operation. If it does not start, browse to D:\autorun.exe and execute this file. Select Install Cisco VPN Client from the application launcher. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Step 2: When the installation is complete, restart your computer.


VPN Client Setup

In order to use the VPN client, it is necessary to create at least one Connection Entry for the UNC Charlotte Wireless VPN. This is a one time event, as all necessary connection information is saved under a connection name which you designate.

Step 1: Click Start, Programs, Cisco Systems VPN Client, Start VPN Dialer
Step 2:

Make a NEW connection entry by completing the following fields:
Name of new connection: (ex: UNC Charlotte Wireless Encryption)
Description: (optional text description)

Step 3: Click Next.
Step 4: For the Host name of Server, type securewireless.wireless.uncc.edu
Step 5: Click Next.
Step 6:

Complete the following fields on the Group Access tab:
Name: verifiedwireless
Password: urunplugged

Step 7: Click Next.
Step 8: At the final tab, click Finish to save the entry.

You are now ready to establish your VPN connection.


Login to VPN

Step 1:

Ensure you have a wireless signal, start your web browser, and login to the UNC Charlotte Wireless Network as you normally do.
(It is important that you do this step first.)

Step 2: Select Start, Programs, Cisco Systems VPN Client, VPN Dialer.
Step 3: Click Connect.
*Note:

Once the group information is verified you will be asked for your personal account information. At this point you should enter your Novell User Name and password.


After successful account authentication you will have a secure encrypted wireless tunnel and will see the VPN icon (Padlock) on the taskbar.


Logoff VPN

Step 1: To end an encrypted wireless computing session, double-click or right-click the VPN icon (Padlock) on the taskbar and select Disconnect to close the tunnel and return to normal web browsing and Internet traffic.
