Computer Tips for Banner Users

You can optimize Banner performance on your computer by following the steps below to update your Internet Explorer and Windows workstation configurations.

Internet Explorer Settings

The following Internet Explorer settings should be changed to optimize Banner performance.

Internet Explorer Settings
Step 1: Select Tools, Internet Options.
Step 2: Click the Advanced tab.
Step 3: Under the Browsing section, uncheck Reuse windows for launching short cuts.
Note: This allows you to open multiple browser windows without Banner closing.
Step 4: Under the Microsoft VM section, uncheck JIT compiler.
Step 5: Under the Security section, check Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

If you are a regular user of Banner INB, you will need to ensure you have installed the minimum version of Sun JRE.

Windows Workstation Configuration Changes

The following Windows workstation actions should be performed to optimize Banner performance.

Display Properties
The DPI setting should be set to Normal size (96 DPI). If it is set to something other than Normal size it can impact the icon view within Banner.
Step 1: Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
Step 2: Double-click Display.
Step 3: Click the Settings tab.
Step 4: Click the Advanced button.
Step 5: Click the General tab.
Step 6: Set the DPI setting to Normal size (96 DPI).
Step 7:

Exit the Display windows and exit the Control Panel.

Spyware Products

Adware is any software program in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. Adware consumes system resources allocated to Internet Explorer and can impact Banner performance and thus, should be blocked. Spybot and Symantec AntiVirus are two anti-spyware tools that can be used to block adware.

Note: Spybot can be installed via the Novell Application Launcher (NAL). Symantec Antivirus has been installed on most University Windows computers. If you need to install a copy of Symantec Antivirus on a home machine, you can check-out the software from the 2nd floor Circulation Desk in Atkins Library.

Disk Defragmenter

Fragmentation of the hard drive can affect contiguous paging space which can impact Banner performance. Get instructions for defragmenting your hard drive.

Computer Name Change

If the desktop computer name is changed (due to re-imaging) after you have been accessing Banner, the TNT Identity server sees a different name associated with a known IP address and will not allow access until the name mismatch has been corrected at the desktop or by the ITS Security department at the server. If this occurs, please contact the Help Center.

TNT Identity Driver and Oracle JInitiator

Sometimes the TNT Identity driver and/or the Oracle JInitiator have to be uninstalled and re-installed to allow navigation to the Banner login window. For assistance with this, please contact the Help Center.
