Student Application

question How does Banner handle cross-listed courses?
answer Banner handles cross-listed courses basically the same way that our current Student Information System (SIS) programs do. Cross-listed courses will have text notes that can be viewed in the schedule of classes indicating that a course is cross-listed. Class rosters and grade rosters will still be generated separately for each cross-listed course.
question You said there is a new degree audit program – called “Curriculum, Advising, and Program Planning” (CAPP) that will have to be built from “the ground up”. What does that really mean?
answer The programs written for the current degree audit programs cannot be migrated into the new system and must be recoded manually. This will be an opportunity to ensure that up-to-date and accurate information about majors and University requirements is available to our students.
question Can this degree audit reflect special waivers, substitutions or exemptions for individual students?
answer Yes, the CAPP system will handle waivers, substitutions and exemptions for individual students just as our current degree audit does.
question Could the academic departments actually code a waiver, substitution or exemption for an individual student directly into Banner? (as opposed to sending a notice to the Registrar’s Office to code the change).
answer When we first implement CAPP, we will handle substitutions and waivers just as we do now. Departments send a notice to the Registrar’s Office approving a change and the Registrar’s staff makes the change. After the system is in place for a year or so, we can better determine if the security and complexity built into CAPP will allow departments’ access to their majors for limited changes.
question When will the new degree audit system be implemented?
answer CAPP will be in place for fall 2006 and the current system will be phased out at the same time. There will be no gap in service. The Registrar’s Office will start working with academic departments in January 2006 to gather the program/major information needed to build programs in CAPP.
question How will we know which training courses to take?
answer On the Banner training website, there is a list of SIS screens and functions, and a list of corresponding courses. For example, if you look up and view general student information (SIS screens: 003/005, 010, 110/111/220/841), you will want to sign up for Banner General Navigation, Student Registrar Forms and Query, and Student Services 1.
question Will we need to take navigational training for each module with which we’re working?
answer No, You only need to take one navigational course. You will, however, need to take a Forms and Query course for each module you handle.
question Is Banner the same as Self Service?
answer Banner has two components, the Self Service screens and native screens. Most people will just need the Self Service screens for their job functions. There are, however, some people who will need more access, and they will use the native screens, which provide student data comparable to SIS screens. Self Service contains information found in the native screens, but in a more user-friendly format.
question Can I take a class as many times as I need?
answer Yes.  We are also offering refresher classes for each training class.  These refresher classes will give you the opportunity to ask questions about specific areas from training and to practice what you have learned.
